2020/10 – Rake the leaves. Disconnect the garden hose. Slap on winter tires. Such are the outdoor chores that come with the fall. None are done, yet I rest. If there is one thing I have learned over the years is not to stress. There is evidence that the Chinese have understood this concept for 4000 years, when they created the character “休” which means “to relax.” It comprises the radical “亻” which represents a man leaning against the radical “木” which represents a tree. In the patriarchal mindset of that time, one could imagine as a synonym a character depicting a woman in the house with a handful of babies and a pile of dirty dishes. If that synonym ever existed, it never caught on.
