2021/11 – I enjoyed visiting Max and Maya’s two-storey playhouse here. I have always admired quirky buildings with character and I have always sought opportunities to explore them. As a child, I sometimes entered abandoned houses, especially out in the countryside. I imagined blending in with all the history of the families that lived there. Nowadays, ‘No Trespassing’ signs advertise these boarded-up gems. I have had the pleasure to visit tumbleweed-style ghost towns in the USA. In Canada, I have visited the historic Upper Canada Village nearby and the Anne of Green Gables house in PEI. In Cappadocia, Turkey, I descended into underground villages where you lock your door with a boulder. I have wandered through Ann Frank’s concealed quarters in Amsterdam. I have crossed drawbridges over moats to lose myself in castles and walled cities. I have entered pyramids, forts and palaces. Sometimes, they had secret stairways, pillars, escape tunnels, turrets, harems, traps or dungeons. I have gawked at the gem-encrusted Taj Majal in India and at creatively designed bird houses in backyards. To me, it is all fascinating architecture of different times, scales and budgets.
